There’s no time like the present to get ready for winter.

Every winter is different and brings its own challenges, freezing temperatures, sometimes wet and windy, and of course, winter viruses – coughs, colds and Covid will rise during this time, putting extra pressure on health services.

That’s why it’s so important for all of us to act now.

When we stay well and manage our health effectively, we reduce the chances of becoming seriously unwell. By increasing our awareness of the health services available to us and knowing where to go for medical help or advice, we can also make sure any existing health conditions are well-managed.

By looking after our own health and checking in on those who may need extra support, we can all play our part in staying well this winter. Together, we can help the NHS by reducing demand and waiting times, allowing health services to focus on people with the greatest needs.

Steps that we can all take include: Child wrapped up in a blanket, coat and hat outside

  • ensuring that we have a well-stocked medicine cabinet, so we can treat minor illnesses and ailments at home.
  • washing our hands regularly and keeping away from others if we or they are ill to prevent the spread of viruses.
  • familiarising ourselves with local NHS services and when to use them - for example, your community pharmacy can offer expert advice and treatment for many common health concerns.
  • download the NHS App to:

o   order repeat prescriptions

o   manage appointments

o   check test results

o   get trusted advice for symptoms

  • ensuring that we are in the best health heading into winter by getting vaccinated, attending regular health checks and screening appointments when invited.
  • being kind to ourselves by keeping in touch with others, staying active and getting outside when we can to help with our mental wellbeing.
  • check in with friends, family, and neighbours — especially those who might be more vulnerable or need extra support during the colder months.
