Local people are being urged to take action if they need urgent dental care by booking one of the extra appointments made available through a national scheme.

Residents of Frimley Health and Care (East Berkshire, Surrey Heath, North East Hampshire and Farnham) can get help at a number of dental practices.
The support is part of an additional 700,000 urgent appointments made available across the country.
The extra services are for people with conditions including severe toothache, persistent and intense pain dental abscess and broken or knocked-out teeth.
Anyone needing urgent care is advised to contact NHS111, either by phone or online, to be directed to the appropriate service. Alternatively, there are some dental practices across the area that can be contacted direct for triage.
Sarah Bellars is Chief Nursing Officer for the NHS Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire and Berkshire West and NHS Frimley Cluster of Integrated Care Boards. She said: “Unfortunately most of us know all too well how painful and disruptive serious dental problems can be, so we’re delighted that these additional appointments will help people with urgent dental care needs to get the treatment they need.
“These appointments are for specific conditions, so please check before getting in touch.”
“Anyone who is already registered with a dentist is encouraged to contact their practice for treatment and advice in the usual way in the first instance but they can also access these urgent appointments.”
Patients are advised that standard dental charges apply to the appointments and that other treatments may be available at the discretion of the dentist. These treatments may involve additional visits and costs.
Anyone who needs to be seen urgently can contact NHS111 for help in accessing care.
Conditions that can be treated through the urgent dental additional appointments scheme are:
- Severe toothache: persistent and intense pain that cannot be managed with over-the-counter painkillers.
- Dental abscess: infection causing swelling, pain, and possibly fever.
- Broken or knocked-out tooth: trauma resulting in a fractured or completely dislodged tooth.
- Bleeding in mouth following a dental procedure or an injury that doesn’t stop by itself but can be self-controlled using local measures. Note that if bleeding cannot be self-controlled in any way, emergency care may be necessary.
- Swelling: significant swelling in the mouth or face that could indicate an infection.
- Fractured, loose or displaced fillings causing pain.
- Severe bleeding from gums, or acute conditions affecting other soft areas of the mouth (such as cheeks or tongue) which require urgent treatment.
